Vazhaithandu Molagootal


A popular South Indian banana stem recipe. 

Ingredients:
Chopped banana stem - 2 cups
Moong dal - 1/4 cup
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Black pepper - 1 tbsp
Urad - 1 tbsp
Red chili - 4
Cumin - 1 tsp
Coconut - 1/4 cup

For Tempering:
Coconut oil - 3 tsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Salt to taste



Method:
  • Soak chopped banana stem in water or buttermilk.

  • Pressure cook moong dal, banana stem with turmeric. 
  • Add water just enough to cover the top layer.
  • Meanwhile roast the pepper, urad, cumin, red chili in a tsp of coconut oil.

  • Add coconuts and cool them.
  • Grind to a fine paste.

  • Mash the dal using the back of your spoon.

  • Add the ground masala.  
  • Adjust water consistency and let it boil.


  • Temper with mustard, urad, and curry leaves in coconut oil.
