Kozhukattai

Kozhukattai is a sweet dish made for Vinayagar/Ganesh chathurthi. A rice dumpling made with sweet filling combination of
channa dal, coconut and jaggery with the flavor of cardamom. The filling is known as pooranam, which is made mostly with coconut and jaggery. Other variations are channa dal, sesame and moong dal with jaggery.

Preparation Time :10 mins | Cooking Time : 25 mins |Serves: 4
Ingredients:
Rice - 1 cup
Channa dal - 1/2 cup
Jaggery - 1/2 cup
Coconut - 1/2 cup(optional)
Cardamom - 1/4 tsp
Salt a pinch
Oil(Nallenai)

Method:
  • Soak rice for an hour and grind to a smooth paste. It can be watery. Add a pinch of salt.

  • Pour it in a non stick pan at medium heat. Keep stirring as not to form any lumps. It gets thicker and forms as a dough.

  • Switch the stove off apply some gingely(nallenai) oil to the dough. cover and keep so that it doesnt get dried out.
  •  On the other hand make you pooranam(fiiling). Pressure cook the channa dal, mash and keep.

  • Melt the jaggery with a little water, you can microwave for 30 sec. Filter and add it to the channa dal. Add cardamom and coconut ( I have avoided the coconut)and stir until you get a thick consistency.

  • Now take the rice dough, make a ball and flatten it in your palms. Keep the pooranam ball inside, fold and seal to desired shape.

  • You can use a mold as an alternative.

  • Steam cook as you would do for idli.

  • Heres what I made with left over pooranam and rice dough. If you have only rice dough make idiyappam. I have mixed equal amount of pooranam and rice dough to make sweet idiyappams.

Note: For making sweet idiyappam, if your pooranam has channa dal not mushed up, remove them as it will bock the holes when pressing in the mold.
