Vendayam Poondu Paal Kanji/Inji Thogayal


A healthy porridge recipe where every ingredient has its health benefits. When you have an upset stomach or indigestion, this is a perfect recipe for the day. The ingredients in this recipe help your immunity and digestion. The vendayam and coconut milk are body coolant and a remedy for ulcers. Have this in the morning empty stomach, and you will have a good result in 2 to 3 days.

You could substitute rice with any preferred millets.

Ingredients:

For Kanji:
  • Broken rice - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 6 cup
  • Vendayam/Methi - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 10 to 12 cloves
  • Coconut milk - 1 cup
  • Salt as needed
For Thogayal:
  • Urad - 1 tbsp
  • Red chili - 4 to 5
  • Ginger - 1/4 cup
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Tamarind - a small gooseberry size
  • Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Jaggery - 1 tsp
  • Salt as needed


Method:
  • Wash and add the rice to 6 cups of water in a pressure cooker.

  • Add vendayam/methi
  • Add garlic.
  • Add salt as needed. Close and pressure cook for 5 whistles.

  • While it is getting cooked, we shall prepare the thogayal. In a pan add a tsp of gingely oil. 1 tbsp of urad and a small piece of asafoetida.
  • Add the ginger. Saute for few mins.
  • Add red chill according to your preference, and some curry leaves.

  • Add tamarind, coconut and switch off.

  • Add a tsp of jaggery.
  • Add salt as needed.
  • Grind to a coarse consistency.
  • Now the rice also is cooked, mash them well and add the coconut milk.


  • Adjust consistency by adding warm water or extra coconut milk.
  • Enjoy this healthy combination while it is warm.
