A delicious and spicy veg recipe perfect for chappathi or rice. Chow- chow is usually made as a lighter version with coconut and as a side dish for vatha kozhambu or and any spicy curry.
I came across this recipe a long time back when my aunt tried this after seeing it on a TV channel. Its been in my mind to upload this recipe. It reminds me only during the days we strictly follow a vegetarian meal.
Preparation Time: 10 mins | Cooking Time:15 mins | Serves: 4
Ingredients:
- Chow chow/chayote - 1 cut into big pieces
- Onion - 1/4 cup finely chopped
- Tomato - 1/4 cup finely chopped
- Ginger Garlic paste - 1 tsp
- Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
- Chili powder - 1/4 tsp
- Dania powder - 1/4 tsp
- Salt to taste
For Masala:- Coconut - 1/4 cup
- Pepper - 1/2 tsp
- Pearl onions - 2
Method:- Fry chayote in 2 tbsp oil with some salt. Remove when half cooked, keep aside.
- Grind coconut, onions, and pepper for masala (fine paste)
- In the same oil, add some mustard and a small piece of cinnamon, onions. Fry for a min.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and fry till the raw smell goes away.
- Now add the tomato cook until soft.
- Add turmeric, chili powder, salt, and saute.
- Add the ground coconut masala and 1/4 cup water.
- Add the fried chayote and mix. Cover and cook on low heat for 5 mins.
- Garnish with cilantro and curry leaves.
