Biriyani Kathrikkai


Biriyani Kathrikkai or Thalcha is a famous dish that is served as an accompaniment with Biriyani. This is one of my younger one's favorite dish. When it is Biriyani at home this brinjal curry has to accompany. 

Preparation Time:30 mins |Cooking Time:10 mins |Serves: 4

Ingredients:
  • Brinjal/Eggplant - 5 nos
  • Onion sliced - 1 cup
  • Curry leaves
  • Tomato chopped - 1 cup
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Tamarind extract - 1/4 cup
  • Oil
  • Salt to taste
To Grind:
  • Roasted peanuts - 2 tbsp
  • White sesame seeds - 1 tbsp
For Tempering:
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Black peppercorns - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad  1/2 tsp
Method:
  • Temper using the above ingredients to 1/4 cup oil.


  • Add the sliced onions, curry leaves, and ginger garlic paste. Saute for a min.

  • Add the sliced brinjal and add salt.

  • Add turmeric, chili powder. Saute for another min.


  • Add the chopped tomatoes.
  • Add the tamarind extract.
  • Grind the roasted peanuts and sesame to a fine paste and add it to the masala.



  • Pressure cook for 1 whistle. Open when steam settles.
  • Garnish with cilantro.  
  • Serve as an accompaniment with Biriyani.
