Paruppu Podi

Homemade podi is always fresh and aromatic. It is so simple and tastier than the store-bought ones. There are a lot of variations in making this podi. You could omit the fried gram and add some black pepper too. I like the taste of fried gram in it. I also use this podi for idli and dosa.

Preparation Time: 20mins | Yields : 250 gms approx
Ingredients:

Toor dal/thuvaram paruppu - 1 cup
Fried gram/ pottu kadala - 1 cup
Red chili/ milagai - 10 to 12
Garlic/poondu - 3
Jeera/ seeragam - 1 tbsp
Dry coconut - 1/2 cup
Salt to taste
Oil - 1 tsp

Method:
  • Dry roast toor dal till golden brown. You can feel the smell of it. Transfer to a plate or bowl.

  • Dry roast fried gram for a min. Transfer to the bowl.

  • Add a tsp of oil and fry the red chili. Transfer.

  • Fry jeera and garlic in the same pan for just a min. Transfer.

  • Fry the coconut. No need to fry if it is dry coconut.
  • Cooldown completely.
  • Add salt and hing to it while grinding.

  • Store in an airtight container. Have with hot rice and nallenai(sesame oil) or ghee.
