Arai (half) kurma is one of a favorite recipe of my mom's
preparation. I think it got its name because of its mild spices and not exactly a full version of kurma. I like to have it hot especially with dosa. My kids also like it so its a frequent visitor at my home.
Preparation Time :10 mins | Cooking Time : 50 mins | Serves: 4
Ingredients:
Onion - 1 big chopped
Garlic - 10 chopped
Tomato - 2 medium size chopped
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Chilli powder - 1 tsp
Salt as needed
Oil
Grind:
Coconut - 3/4 cup
Roasted channa dal/Pottu kadalai - 1 tbsp
For Tempering:
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad - 1/2 tsp
Method:
- In a wide pan or kadai add some oil and temper with mustard and urad.
- When splutters add the chopped onions and garlic, saute for 2 to 3 mins.
- Now add the tomatoes and saute until soft.
- Add in the turmeric, chilli powder and salt. Mix them all together.
- Add 1 cup of water and let it boil. Meanwhile grind the coconut with the fried gram and keep them ready.
- Let it boil for 2 mins and add the ground coconut paste.
- Add another cup of water, adjust according to your consistency.
- Boil for 2 to 3 mins and switch off. Garnish with cilantro.
- Enjoy with idli/dosa.
Note:
1. Always adjust chilli powder and salt according to your taste.
2. My chilli powder has dania already mixed in it, so if you are using plain chilli powder add dania also.
3. It gets a little thicker as you rest them and moreover for dosa its good when you have a thinner consistency.
