My family became a favorite of puttu when we had been to
Kerala on a trip to Pal Aruvi (Water Falls)
We had to walk on the rocky roads to reach the falls and that's where they had a small shop serving steamed hot puttu right out of the puttu maker served on a leaf with just grated coconut. It was so tasty, that's when I decided to get a puttu maker and started preparing at home. I have had puttu when my mom makes it at home, steaming the flour in idli pathiram and serving with grated coconut, sugar and elaichi powder. Even now I like them the same way. Though kadala curry or banana are the traditional Keralite way it is not a favorite side dish for me.
Preparation Time: 10 mins |Cooking Time: 15 mins |Serves: 2 to 3
Ingredients:
Puttu flour/ Rice flour/ Ragi flour - 1 cup
Grated coconut - as needed
Salt - a pinch
Water
Method:
- Take 1 cup of puttu flour ( I have used red rice flour). Add salt and mix well.
- Now start sprinkling water and keep crumbling.
- Make sure there are no big lumps. The flour is crumbly at the same time you can feel the moisture in it.
- Now start layering in the puttu maker starting with coconut then flour again coconut...end with coconut.
- Steam them for 10 mins or when you see the steam coming out on top thru the lid. Kadala curry getting ready behind.
- Slide them out.
- Serve with kadala curry, banana or my favorite way of sugar and elaichi powder.
