Nandu/Crab Masala

Nandu/Crab Masala, a mouthwatering spicy dish made in simple home-style
way. I would suggest you use only a fresh crab. I was lucky to get fresh and live crabs in my place. Amma used to make it very spicy. This masala goes well with rice, so usually, the masala is saved for rice and the crab is eaten alone. I am not a big fan of crabs but I do like it to have once in a while.

Preparation Time:10 mins | Cooking Time: 15 mins | Serves: 4

Ingredients:

Crab - 4 nos
Onion - 1 small chopped finely
Tomato - 1 small chopped finely
Ginger garlic - 1 tbsp
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Chili powder - 1/2 tsp
Oil
Salt to taste

Grind:

Coconut - 2 tbsp
Pepper - 1 tbsp

Tempering:

Mustard and Urad - 1/2 tsp

Method:
  • Scrape and clean the crab. Just pound and break with a stone if possible so that the masala gets inside. Drain excess water and keep.

  • In a wide pan add a little oil for tempering. Add mustard and urad.
  • When splutters add onions, saute.
  • Add tomatoes, ginger and garlic paste.
  • Add turmeric, chili powder, and salt.
  • Add in ground coconut masala.
  • When starts to boil, add in the crabs. Coat them well with the masala.

  • Close and cook for about 5 mins.
  • Open and cook until the masala is a little dry. This should take another 5 mins. Garnish with cilantro when done.

  • Enjoy as it is and the masala with hot rice.
