Sura Puttu

Sura Puttu is a South Indian delicacy usually had with meen/fish kozhambhu and rice.
Adding carrots is a recipe made in my in-law's house. My mom doesn't add them. It is said that in those days ladies get to eat only after their husbands eat, so just to increase the quantity of the dish they add the carrots. But it is as good as it should be. This dish is usually given to lactating mothers.

Preparation Time:15 mins | Cooking Time:15 mins |Serves: 4
Ingredients:

Sura/shark - 2 lb/400 gms
Onions - 1 chopped finely
Green chili - 6 to 7 finely chopped
Ginger - 1 inch finely chopped
Garlic - 1 whole finely chopped
Carrot - 1 grated (optional)
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Chili powder - 1/2 tsp (optional)
Salt to taste
Oil
Cilantro and curry leaves for garnishing

For Seasoning:
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad - 1/2 tsp

Method:

  • Wash tuna using salt and cook with turmeric. This usually takes about 10 mins.

  • Drain from the water, peel the skin off, and scramble the flesh using your hands. I have added a little chili powder to it.

  • In a pan add oil and seasoning.
  • Saute the onions, garlic, ginger, and green chilies.

  • Add the scrambled fish, salt to taste.
  • Saute until dry.
  • Add carrots (optional), cilantro, and curry leaves. Cook for an additional 2 to3 mins when you add carrots.
  • Mix them all together.
  • Serve as an accompaniment with fish kozhambu and rice. It tastes good even when mixed with plain white rice.
